How do simple Theraplay® games help a child and their caregiver connect?

The Theraplay® dimensions represent the essential qualities of a healthy child–parent relationship: Structure, Engagement, Nurture and Challenge. Each one is something secure relationships do naturally — and each one can be deliberately offered through simple, playful interactions to help a child feel safe, seen and worth holding close.

The four dimensions

Structure

The adult creates predictability, organises and regulates the child's experience. This helps the child to feel safe.

Engagement

The adult focuses on the child and connects in a playful way to help the child feel lovable and wanted, and to experience a positive connection with their parent. Parents experience and learn how to initiate positive interactions with their child. For some parents and children, this is a relatively rare experience.

Nurture

The adult gives calming and soothing care to the child, making them feel good and helping them to realise that they are worthy of good, safe care.

Challenge

The adult helps the child to acquire new skills and gain a sense of competence and mastery. The activities are simple, age-appropriate and fun.
